I remember describing to some third year residents how starting right off the bat in my own private experimental practice in 2001 the patient and I sat side by side as I looked things up on line and documented in the chart.
One resident was horrified: "How can you be honest when the patient sees what you really think. For instance if you think the person is an alcoholic?"
I was then horrified: "How can you be dishonest about something so important?"
I've always believed in openness and sharing.
The electronic tools of the future will be those that support seamless communication and (I'll throw my nervous colleagues a bone) at least provide the capability of total - yet secure - openness of 'medical records.'
